"A forest spirit awakens in a dystopian future where science has proven that magic exists.”
The game follows the story of Feeñ, a forest spirit waking up in a dystopian and mystical future in which spirits and humans reconnect in an unexpected manner—through advanced technology. Science has caught up to magic, and while animist human communities use one to complement the other, an antagonistic techno-feudalist class, residing in mega-cities, uses science to control magic for the sake of profit.
Violently awakened by the destruction of his forest, Feeñ embarks on a journey through deforested plains, deserts, mines, polluted water worlds, and other devastated ecosystems to find the source of all the degradation.
On his path, he not only needs to prevent his contamination by fellow spirits in their sinister form, polluted by oil spills, waste, and toxins, but is also confronted with various moral dilemmas (save a species or let it go extinct to progress faster) requiring him to make choices that determine the story’s outcome.
Eventually, Feeñ reaches the mega-city “Eternal.” Its outskirts are dystopian concrete jungles, traversed by mega pipes that supply richer parts of the city. Almost no animal or plant life can be found here. Feeñ has to use the seeds saved from extinction on his journey to grow plants wherever possible to establish a connection to the underground roots and funghi network he draws his energy from.
Wandering around, Feeñ encounters human animists who had also seen their home destroyed and had to come to the city for survival. They inform Feeñ that some of his spirit kin who fled with them are hiding in the area. Heading out to find them, Feen is captured by spirit jaegers, a human task force trained to hunt down spirits and bring them in for “transfer.”
Feeñ wakes up in a lab, now in a humanoid body. He is welcomed by Amila Pesco, a brilliant physicist who had developed the so-called “Quantum Assembler,” a technology that is not only able to establish and re-establish specific relationships between particles over time and space but also to extract spirit energy and transfer it into biomechanical bodies.
Pesco’s research is funded by “the council,” a group of wealthy oligarchs, which tasked her to create a spirit workforce that can sustain food production and a livable environment in the “high city.” Although a conventional scientist by training, Pesco feels increasingly conflicted because her curiosity for magic and the spirit world has grown since her breakthrough invention.
Feeñ and Pesco have an exchange that ultimately convinces her to set Feeñ free. He now has to navigate the high city and what he finds is an impressively beautiful, lush, and clean utopia, with buildings covered in plant life and animals in luxurious enclosures for human entertainment. He encounters other “bodied” spirits tending to the paradise until he meets one that secretly tells him the story of a place underneath the city, where many spirits disappear to. The spirit directs Feeñ towards the lower levels of the high city, where he now finds the entrance to the low city.
Here, Feeñ discovers the source of all the environmental destruction: an underground city built from metal and rock through which all the waste of the high city is pumped out to eventually contaminate the surrounding land. Bodied spirits are forced to supply and maintain a mycelium and root network embedded in the rock with their energy until depleted and fully absorbed into the network.
Feeñ returns to the higher levels to find Amila Pesco. He recounts what he has seen, and Pesco presents him with two choices: either she helps him escape the city, or she supports him in triggering a spirit uprising.
The first option would allow him to find one of the remaining forests and return to his natural state; the other would lead to violence, fighting, and destruction but also to a potentially better future which would transform the city into a true utopia in which all spirits would return to their natural state and live in harmony with humans.
What kind of world will Feeñ create?
